Underwater Digital Camera Pt.2
Taking Great Underwater Digital Photos
If you are shooting with your waterproof digital camera, you need to take note of a few things to help you come up with the best images underwater.
Remember, the deeper into the water you travel, the more that the existing light diffuses. This means that your underwater digital camera will produce images darker than similar images on land – this is mainly because of the light diffusion in the red spectrum. To avoid this common problem, use white balance to allow for more natural colors.
Another common, and yet unexpected problem is that pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land, when set at the same zoom settings. Be sure to check your underwater digital camera’s viewfinder to capture the correct picture angle and size desired.
An underwater digital camera with its built-in flash will produce what is sometimes called "marine show" phenomenon. It is a phenomenon where the pictures come out blurry and with white particles floating throughout the photo. The best way to avoid this phenomenon is to use an external flash with your underwater digital camera.
Planning ahead is always the best thing to do. Be sure to check your equipment before your dive. Before using your underwater digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are any, even tiny, leaks anywhere throughout the case. Make sure that no grains of sand or other debris (like a piece of hair, for example) is stuck in the seal that may allow water to permeate the case and wet your camera.
It is also advisable to put a small packet or two of silica gel inside the case of your underwater digital camera as long as they won’t disturb the camera’s operation. These packs can often be found in various packages where moisture needs to be reduced. (Reuse this silica gel to keep the moisture from forming inside your camera case.)
The more sophisticated underwater digital cameras come with optional lenses. Don’t be afraid to add these lenses to your underwater digital camera kit. Macro lenses will help you capture small things without getting too close and startling your subject.
So get out there and take a long walk off a short pier to get some great underwater photos.
